Working at the Zurich James Joyce Foundation, making full use of the library, archives and activities, and exchanging ideas with Joyceans as well as translator colleagues from around the world while staying at Translation House Looren:
The two institutions invite applications for the Joyce Scholarship and Looren Residency 2025 offered by the Friends of the Zurich James Joyce Foundation and Translation House Looren

Applications are invited from translators with an ongoing translation project of a work by James Joyce that they will continue working on while in Switzerland. The scholarship does not support completed translations awaiting publication. All target languages are eligible.

Applicants are expected to be familiar with Joyce scholarship, i.e. to already have translated one significant Joyce text or to have published on Joyce (e.g. an essay).

The Scholarship/Residency includes a one-month stay at Translation House Looren in Wernetshausen, as well as public transportation to and from Zurich, to work regularly at the Zurich James Joyce Foundation. It amounts to CHF 1’500.- (which is also to cover travel costs to and from Switzerland).

During their stay, Scholarship and Residency winners are expected to give a short presentation of their ongoing translation project at the James Joyce Foundation.

Please include the following documents in your application:

  • a short biography including professional background (max. 1 page)
  • a list of your published translations, incl. references of previous Joyce publications
  • a letter of motivation
  • a description of your translation project (max. 1 page)
  • a publisher’s contract for the translation (signed, with English translation of all relevant
    information, incl. manuscript delivery deadline, print run, projected publication date, and
    remuneration).
