The conference proposes to approach Ireland as interface, a locus that allows intercultural exchange, rather than as an essentialist concept. It seeks to examine contact zones with other cultures as a site of productive and mutually enriching dialogue which can play a seminal role in de-escalation and prevention of conflict.
Such a perspective is inflected not only by increasing globalisation, but also more specifically by recent developments such as the European migrant crisis, climate change, or indeed the COVID-19 pandemic.
The conference will focus on the negative phenomena associated with the current challenges as well, particularly the pan-European (or global) resurgence of toxic nationalist discourse, and examine how a de-essentialised concept of culture may assist in combating these.
Thus, the arts may be viewed as a particularly important site of dialogue; however, the interpretation of history and the examination of cultural memory formation are at least as vital, as is the examination of the transformations of Irish society, politics, and economics.
Lastly, the conference intends to discuss interdisciplinary dialogues in Irish studies, treating the frontiers of disciplines, research areas and methodologies as interfaces that are changing how we understand Ireland past, present, and future.
We invite contributions that seek to engage with the following and related areas in particular:
- The arts as a site of dialogue and the role of dialogue in identity formation
- Developments in Irish historiography in the face of current global challenges
- Dialogues with the past: recent developments in Irish memory studies
- The hybridisation of identity and its impact on the concept of tradition
- Creativity and performativity as agents of dismantling essentialist notions of identity
- The role of intermediality in the formation of culture
- The effects of the European migrant crisis on cultural identity
- The resurgence of nationalist discourse in relation to Brexit and/or the current global challenges, such as climate change or the COVID-19 pandemic

- The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the nature and sustainability of the Irish economy
- Interfaces between Ireland and the diaspora
- The re-interpretation of Ireland’s past in relation to the Decade of Centenaries
- Interdisciplinary dialogues in Irish studies: boundaries of disciplines as interfaces, or places of non-communication?
- The effects of climate change debates on Irish studies
- Recent dialogues in Irish-language and English-language scholarship
- Irish-language writing in dialogue with other European literatures
- Translation as an interface between languages and literatures
- Developments in Irish cinema, including documentary film making and its interfaces with historiography, sociology, politics, and economics
- Interfaces between disability studies and Irish studies

Ba mhian leis an gcomhdháil breathnú ar Éirinn mar chomhéadan, láthair a éascaíonn malartú idir cultúir, seachas mar choincheap eisintiúil. Tá sé mar chuspóir aici pointí teagmhála le cultúir eile a iniúchadh mar fhoinsí allagair a shaibhríonn an dá thaobh agus a chabhraíonn le coimhlint a mhaolú agus a sheachaint. Tá gá leis an bpeirspictíocht seo sa tréimhse seo ina bhfuil borradh faoin domhandú, agus tábhacht ar leith aici i bhfianaise imeachtaí reatha ar nós ghéarchéim na himirce san Eoraip, an athraithe aeráide, nó na paindéime COVID-19 féin. Díreoidh an chomhdháil ar fheiniméin dhiúltacha a bhaineann leis na dúshláin reatha chomh maith, go háirithe athmhúscailt an náisiúnachais radacaigh ar fud na hEorpa (agus na cruinne), agus féachfar cén chaoi ar féidir le coincheap neamh-eisintiúil an chultúir cur i gcoinne na bhfeiniméan sin. Is féidir breathnú ar na healaíona mar láithreacha dialóige a bhfuil tábhacht ar leith acu; ach baineann an tábhacht chéanna le léirmhíniú na staire, le hiniúchadh ar mhúnlú cuimhne chultúir, agus le taighde ar athruithe i sochaí, i bpolaitíocht agus i ngeilleagar na hÉireann. Anuas air sin, tá sé i gceist ag an gcomhdháil dialóga idirdhisciplíneacha i léann na hÉireann a phlé, ag breathnú ar theorainneacha na ndisciplíní, ar na réimsí taighde agus ar na modheolaíochtaí mar chomhéadain a athraíonn ár dtuiscint ar Éirinn sa stair, sa lá atá inniu ann agus san am atá le teacht.
Cuirimid fáilte ar leith roimh pháipéir a dhíríonn ar na topaicí seo a leanas, agus topaicí eile a bhaineann leo:
- Na healaíona mar láthair dhialóige agus ról na dialóige i múnlú na féiniúlachta
- Forbairtí i scríobh staire na hÉireann i bhfianaise na ndúshlán domhanda atá ann faoi láthair
- Dialóga leis an am atá thart: forbairtí nua i léann cuimhne na hÉireann
- Hibridiú na féiniúlachta agus a thionchar ar choincheap an traidisiúin

- Ról an idirmheánachais i múnlú an chultúir
- Tionchar ghéarchéim na himirce san Eoraip ar an bhféiniúlacht chultúrtha
- Athmhúscailt an dioscúrsa náisiúnaíoch i bhfianaise an Bhreatimeachta agus / nó na ndúshlán domhanda atá ann faoi láthair, ar nós an athraithe aeráide agus na paindéime COVID-19
- Tionchar an Bhreatimeachta ar an bhféiniúlacht Éireannach mar a léirítear é i mbeartas eachtrach na hÉireann
- Dearcadh na socheolaíochta ar impleachtaí atá ag géarchéim Eorpach na himirce d’Éirinn
- Tionchar na paindéime COVID-19 ar nádúr agus ar inmharthanacht gheilleagar na hÉireann.
- Comhéadain idir Éire agus an diaspóra
- Athléamh ar stair na hÉireann le linn Deich mBliana na gCuimhneachán
- Dialóga idirdhisciplíneacha i léann na hÉireann: teorainneacha na ndisciplíní mar chomhéadain, nó láithreacha balbha gan chumarsáid?
