The Talking TYA Research Network is a research community for TYA makers and researchers across the island of Ireland.

This day-long symposium, in collaboration with Baboró, brings together theatre makers, researchers, policy makers and teachers to discuss theatre for Children and Young People. Such work might be to support cross-curricular learning; personal and social development; social inclusion; vocational knowledge, skills and experience; and advocacy for the voices of Children and Young People. The range of practices to be discussed will include, but is not limited to, classroom drama, Theatre-in-Education, Applied Theatre, Youth Theatre and Theatre for Young Audiences.

Events throughout the day will feature research presentations, discussion panels and a keynote lecture by world-leading researcher Professor Helen Nicholson, Royal Holloway University of London entitled ‘Making, Learning, Listening: feeling the atmosphere in theatre for children’, Professor Nicholson, has published widely on theatre by, with, and for young people. And, in her keynote, she will draw on research undertaken with The National Theatre, The Royal Opera House, and the Young Vic Theatre in London, to explore the work that atmosphere does. The work of atmosphere or aestheticised spaces is also the theme of a workshop led by Dr Gill Brigg, a UK-based drama/theatre specialist who works with theatre makers and educators to develop theatre/drama practice with neurodivergent groups. In addition, there will be a range of panel discussions and paper presentations linked to the conference theme.
