EVENT: States of Confinement – The Jail Journals of Rosamund Jacob and Dorothy Macardle
Museum of Literature Ireland
15 November, 12-6:30PM
‘States of Confinement’, hosted by the UCD Centre for Cultural Analytics, will explore and celebrate the autobiographical life writing and political fiction of Rosamund Jacob and Dorothy Macardle. Jacob and Macardle wrote journals during their imprisonment in Mountjoy Prison and Kilmainham Jail as Republican activists during the Irish Civil War in 1922-3. To mark the centenary of their incarceration and the legacy of their writing, actors Carrie Crowley and Kathy Rose O’Brien will read selections from the jail journals, academics will contextualise the life and writing of Jacob and Macardle, and contemporary women writers Sophie White, SinĂ©ad Gleeson, and Lia Mills will share extracts from their work. The conversation will continue afterwards with a wine reception.
