Reimagining Traditions

Occasioned by the current Decade of Centenaries, Ireland’s proverbial obsession with cultural traditions has spurred a wide range of scholarship that has offered critical interrogations of monolithic conceptualisations of tradition as well as important reflections on the ways in which Irish traditions have been reimagined time and again. In 2018, we will address the shifting meanings of tradition in a year that marks the centenary of various seminal events in Irish history, such as the controversial introduction of the Military Service Bill as well as the 1918 elections, which led Sinn Féin to proclaim the First Dáil. In literature, too, 1918 was a momentous year, with the publication of literary texts ranging from Terence MacSwiney’s Battle-Cries to James Joyce’s Telemachus episode in The Little Review.

The diversity of such texts demonstrates the centrality of tradition to the Irish (self-) imagination and suggests that tradition should be acknowledged as one of the central themes in Irish and Irish diaspora literature, which is often premised on the question of what it means to be Irish, and what the role of the Irish past should be in the present. The 2018 IASIL conference will offer scholars the opportunity to explore how Irish literature engages with tradition. Using this overarching interpretive category, this conference will explore the ways traditions are invented, reinvented, subverted, and repositioned, facilitating reflections on a strongly differentiated Irish and Irish-diasporic literary landscape.

Possible topics include:

  • Literary (re)conceptualisations of folklore and associated folk traditions in Irish literature;
  • Representations of authenticity, local colour, the rural, and the regional in Irish literature;
  • Literary (re)configurations of contested historical events and traditions;
  • Irish literature vis-à-vis vernacular and diasporic traditions;
  • Intertextuality and experimentation with literary genres and traditions by Irish writers;
  • The modifications of literary traditions (e.g. styles, genres, forms of dissemination) as a result of emigration from Ireland and immigration into Ireland .
  • (Re)imaginations and adaptations of literary texts, movements and authors on the Irish screen and stage;
  • Technological developments in the transmission of Irish literary traditions, authors and texts;

The organisers invite proposals of 250 words for twenty-minute papers, in English or Irish, for three-paper panels or discussion roundtables. These can be sent to: iasil2018@let.ru.nl. Please also include a brief biographical sketch of max. 50 words. Deadline for submission: 31 January 2018.

Athshamhlú Traidisiún

Spreag Deich mBliana na gCuimhneachán dúil sheanbhunaithe na nÉireannach i dtraidisiúin chultúrtha agus is fairsing an scoláireacht atá ag teacht chun cinn dá réir. Caitheann an taighde seo amhras ar choincheapa monailiteacha an traidisiúin agus léiríonn sé athshamhlú leanúnach na dtraidisiún in Éirinn riamh anall. In 2018, tabharfaidh muid aghaidh ar bhríonna luaineacha an traidisiúin sa tréimhse ina gcomórfar céad bliain tar éis imeachtaí éagsúla tábhachtacha i stair na hÉireann, mar shampla achtú an Bhille um Sheirbhís Mhíleata agus teacht le chéile na Chéad Dála i ndiaidh toghcháin 1918. Tá tábhacht ag baint le 1918 ó thaobh na litríochta de freisin – foilsíodh roinnt mhaith téacsanna, Battle Cries le Terence MacSwiney agus eipeasóid Telemachus le James Joyce in The Little Review san áireamh.

Léiríonn éagsúlacht na dtéacsanna seo a lárnaí atá an traidisiún d’(fhéin-)samhlaíocht na hÉireann agus deimhníonn sí gur cheart aitheantas a thabhairt don traidisiún mar cheann de na téamaí lárnacha i litríocht na hÉireann agus i litríocht an diaspóra Éireannaigh a dhíríonn go minic ar cad is Éireannachas ann agus cén ról ba cheart a bheith ag stair na hÉireann sa lá atá inniu ann. Tabharfaidh comhdháil IASIL 2018 deis do scoláirí a fhiosrú conas a théann litríocht na hÉireann i ngleic leis an traidisiún. Agus an léirmhíniú cuimsitheach seo mar fhráma tagartha, pléifidh an chomdháil seo na bealaí ina gcruthaítear, ina n-athchruthaítear, ina dtreascraítear agus ina n-athlonnaítear traidisiúin chun léargais nua ar litríocht ilghnéitheach na hÉireann agus litríocht an diaspóra Éireannaigh a spreagadh.

Ar na hábhair ar féidir díriú orthu, tá:

  • Coincheapa an bhéaloidis agus traidisiúin an phobail i litríocht na hÉireann;
  • Léiriú na barántúlachta, an bhlais áitiúil, na tuaithe agus na réigiún i litríocht na hÉireann;
  • Léiriú liteartha ar imeachtaí staire agus ar thraidisiúin atá ina n-ábhar coimhlinte;
  • Litríocht na hÉireann vis-à-vis traidisiúin dúchais nó an diaspóra;
  • An idirthéacsúlacht agus turgnaimh scríbhneoirí Éireannacha le seánraí liteartha agus traidisiúin;
  • Athrú traidisiún liteartha (e.g. stíleanna, seánraí, modhanna seachadta) de bharr eisimirce as Éirinn agus de bharr inimirce go hÉirinn;
  • (Ath)samhluithe agus cóirithe téacsanna liteartha, gluaiseachtaí agus údar i scannán agus in amharclannaíocht na hÉireann;
  • Forbairt na teicneolaíochta i gcraobhscaoileadh thraidisiún liteartha na hÉireann, údar agus téacsanna;

Mar atá de nós ag IASIL, cuirtear fáilte roimh pháipéir as réimsí eile Léann na hÉireann chomh fada agus a bhaineann siad leis an litríocht. Tá lucht eagraithe na comhdhála ag lorg achoimrí 250 focal ar pháipéir fiche nóiméad, ar phainéil thrí pháipéar nó ar dhíospóireachtaí comhchéime. Is féidir iad a chur i láthair as Béarla nó as Gaeilge. Seoltar na hachoimrí chuig iasil2018@let.ru.nl maille le nóta gairid beathaisnéise 50 focal ar a mhéad. Is é 31 Eanáir 2018 an spriocdháta. Féach freisin ar http://www.ru.nl/iasil2018.

Scoláireachtaí
