Call for Papers for MLA Special Session: “Oceanic Ireland”
Understandably, land and landscape have received the most attention in studies of Irish literary traditions. But it could be argued that water is equally significant, including oceans, maritime exchange and migration, Ireland’s situation as an island in an imperial archipelago, and both the economic and ecological significance of ports, coastlines, and rivers. The panel will examine how developments in the “Blue Humanities,” including Oceanic and Archipelagic Studies, might productively enhance our understanding of Irish modernity, broadly conceived. An essay collection devoted to these issues is also planned. Please submit 350-500 word abstracts to Nels Pearson (npearson@fairfield.edu) and Nicholas Allen (na@uga.edu) by 3 March.
