Is there a woman writer you’d like to champion? An out-of-print text you’d love to see back in print, and assign for a class you teach? Dan Bolger, commissioning editor at New Island Books wants to hear from you. Dan wrote to us as follows:
Each year, we publish two out-of-print or underappreciated titles of outstanding merit in our ‘Modern Irish Classic’ series. Past titles include Bogmail by Patrick McGinley, The Cards of the Gambler by Ben Kiely, The Bogman by Walter Macken, Clare by John MacKenna, The Last of the High Kings by Ferdia Mac Anna, Langrishe, Go Down by Aidan Higgins and Happiness and In the Middle of the Fields by Mary Lavin. So, you might have noticed, pretty male heavy. Since taking up my current role a couple of years ago, I’ve been attempting to diversify the list – and so far we have had fantastic success with the Mary Lavin publications in particular.

Here’s my question for you all: and I appreciate greatly any help or direction you can give me:
If there was one book by an Irish woman you wish were available to you to teach to your students in Irish studies courses, what would that book be?
Any suggestions you may have will be hugely appreciated, to be sent to dan.bolger@newisland.ie
