Tradition, Transition and Transformation:

Performance and Cultural Dynamics

 Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd May 2015

IT Tralee, North Campus, Dromtacker, Tralee, Co. Kerry

This conference will address performance as a site of cultural tradition, transition and transformation. Performances will be considered as lenses through which indigenous cultures are preserved, where Irish and global cultures are presented, cultural hybridities become evident and turning points in cultural development receive recognition. Themes pertaining to colonialism, nationalism, interculturalism, ethnicity, identity, gender, sexuality, space and globalisation will receive attention. Cultural as well as theatrical performances will be explored, taking into account all forms of expression including dance, music, mime, speech, folk and oral traditions, sound and design.

Possible topics include:

Reconstructions of Identity and Hybridity

Memory, Myth and Ritual in Performance

Politics and Performance

Theatricalisation of Marginalized Cultures

Indigenous and Westernised Forms of Theatre

Folk Theatre: Definitions, Parameters, Crossroads, Street Performance

The 2015 Irish Society for Theatre Research Conference is delighted to welcome keynote speakers Professor Anna McMullan, University of Reading, and Dr. Lillis O Laoire, National University of Ireland, Galway. There will be a wide range of panels, research papers, practice demonstrations, and performances. Papers are invited on all aspects of theatre and performance in addition to the topics suggested above.

All delegates will be welcome but those who attend must register and become members of the society. Application forms will be available during the event. Please contact Dr. Sharon Phelan by email at istr2015@gmail.com

 The delivery of papers, presentations and performances should not exceed twenty minutes and the deadline for proposals (max. 250 words) along with an e-mail address and a brief biography is Monday February 2nd 2015.
