ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The 2004 IASIL Conference is being hosted by the English Department, NUI Galway. The conference will comprise parallel panels, keynote lectures, readings and public debates. A selection of recent Irish films may be screened.

Many leading authorities on Irish literature have already confirmed their attendance; full details will be included on the IASIL website in due course.

The Conference will take place on the campus of the National University of Ireland, Galway, which is situated on the banks of the River Corrib, close to the city centre. Accommodation includes student apartments and nearby hotels, all within walking distance of the conference venue and city.

There will be an opportunity to explore the city and countryside during the conference, and an optional post-conference weekend trip to County Clare. The conference will coincide with the Galway Arts Festival, and will conclude shortly before Galway’s famous Race Week. Nearby attractions include Connemara, the Aran Islands, and the Cliffs of Moher. Yeats’s Tower (Thoor Ballylee) and Lady Gregory’s Coole Park are both within a short drive of the city, and delegates may also visit the house of Nora Barnacle in Galway city.

CONFERENCE THEME
The conference theme is “Writing Ireland 2004: Past, Present and Future”. This theme acknowledges the literary anniversaries that occur in 2004, while also noting the present state of Irish writing – and looks to the future, including the new media which are expanding the range of literary creativity. Papers on this theme, or any other aspect of Irish writing, are most welcome. Particularly welcome are papers that address any of the literary anniversaries taking place in 2004, or papers that focus on the many writers, theatre companies and film-makers associated with Galway.

A peer-reviewed selection of papers may be published, though this has not yet been confirmed. Acceptance of a paper for delivery at IASIL 2004 does not guarantee publication.

PANELS
A number of independently organised panels have been established, some of which still have active calls for papers. These include:
- Historicising Beckett
- Re-appraising Edna O’Brian
- Celebrating 100 Years of the Abbey Theatre
- Irish Women’s Writing and Contemporary Feminist Scholarship

More information is on http://www.iasil.org/galway/panels/

GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS
The organisers of the 2004 IASIL Conference particularly welcome proposals from Graduate Research Students in Irish Studies. To that end, the Association is making available six Graduate Scholarships to student members of IASIL living outside of Ireland. Any full-time graduate research student is entitled to apply for the scholarship, which will be presented to successful candidates at the conclusion of the conference. The deadline for Graduate Fellowship Applications is 15 March 2004.
