IASIL Conference 2004: Original Call for Papers

IASIL 2004 – IASIL in Ireland
National University of Ireland, Galway
20 – 23 July 2004

FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS

“Writing Ireland 2004: Past, Present and Future”

The International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures invites you to attend the 2004 conference at the National University of Ireland, Galway.  The conference theme acknowledges the literary anniversaries which occur in 2004, while also exploring the present state of Irish writing, and looking to the future, perhaps including the new media which are expanding the range of literary creativity.

The Conference activities will take place on the campus of the university, which is situated on the banks of the River Corrib, close to the city centre.  Accommodation choices will include student apartments in Corrib village, and a range of local hotels.  There will be an opportunity to explore the city and countryside during the conference, and an optional post-conference weekend trip to County Clare.  The conference will coincide with the Galway Arts Festival, and will conclude shortly before Galway’s famous Race Week.

The conference homepage may be viewed HERE.

Proposals for papers of 20 minutes' duration (approx 2,800 words) are welcome on any aspect of the literatures of Ireland, especially those that focus on the conference theme.  A selection of papers may be published, though this has not yet been confirmed.

You may wish to submit a paper proposal that focusses on one of the literary anniversaries being celebrated in 2004, or on a writer or institution particularly associated with Galway.

Conference committee at the Department of English, NUI Galway, Ireland: Riana O’Dwyer, Patrick Lonergan, Kirry O’Brien, Lesa Ní Mhunghaile.

Initial enquiries, paper proposals and (particularly) panel proposals should be addressed to conference@iasil.org

Letters of invitation will be issued only to current IASIL members whose proposals have been accepted.

Added 16 December 2003...

The deadline 15 December 2003 has now passed. The IASIL 2004 Conference Organising Committee would like to thank all who submitted proposals for the conference. We are delighted with the very enthusiastic response we received. All papers received before the deadline will be reviewed shortly, and accepted speakers will be contacted in January 2004.

Details of accepted speakers will be posted to this website in February 2004. Paper abstracts will appear soon after.

A second call for papers was issued by post to all current IASIL Members in December 2003. A final call for papers was issued by email on 14 February 2004 with a 1 March deadline. Read the final call for papers HERE.
