Welcome to the 2006-2007 IASIL Newsletter

IASIL Annual Bibliography

Each year the IASIL Bibliography Committee compiles a list of publications on Irish literature, language and culture from around the world, which is published in the Autumn/Winter issue of the Irish University Review.

Proposed Guidelines for contributors

As discussed at the 2006 AGM, a set of guidelines has been prepared for the IASIL Bibliography. Members are requested to send feedback on these proposals to Frank Molloy – fmolloy@csu.edu.au

  • Anyone writing on Irish literatures, language and culture is invited to submit bibliographical details of their publications either to the representative in his/her country (see list below), or if there is no representative, to the Chair of the Bibliography Committee, Frank Molloy – fmolloy@csu.edu.au
  • Submissions should be made by 31 May each year on work published in the previous year.
  • What to report on: books and articles (either in journals or in collections of essays, conference proceedings, and the like) on individual Irish writers and on Irish literatures and theatre more generally. For the ‘General Studies’ section, items of a general cultural nature can also be listed, e.g. on language, film, folklore, etc.
  • Any studies on the literature of the Irish diaspora, either in general terms or on specific authors, are welcome.
  • What not to report on: historical, geographical and sociological articles and books, unless there’s a literary or cultural angle; also translations of Irish novels, plays, collections of poetry into other languages, unless there is an introduction and/or notes, commentary etc.
  • Any articles or books missed from the Bibliography in previous years can be included. Just give the year of publication if not the current one.
  • Proof read all items carefully: author’s name, title of article or book, publication details. Take care particularly with diacritical marks. The representative to whom you send information may be able to correct errors, but don't depend on that. What you send may go unaltered into the published list.
  • The ‘General Studies’ section will now have subsections, making the information easier to use. The subsections will be (a) Literature (b) Theatre (c) Language and Culture (d) Irish-related work by non-Irish writers.
  • Abbreviations, especially for journals and publishers, are used sparingly at present. Commonly-accepted abbreviations such as PMLA, ELH, IUR, E-I, plus OUP, CUP, and more generally UP after any university press are now acceptable.
  • Items on non-Irish writers, such as Spenser, Trollope, Thackeray, Arnold, who wrote the occasional Irish-related work are welcome. Rather than being listed under the writer’s name in the ‘Individual Authors’ section, they will be included in section (d) in ‘General Studies’. Irish diaspora works will also be included in this subsection.
  • On book reviews: the current policy is to include review essays only. We will now consider other reviews, especially those regarded as significant and extensive. An indication of word length would be 3000+ words. A brief note justifying the inclusion of a book review would be welcomed by the country representative.
  • If you need guidance on how to present details of publications, please refer to the IUR, 35:2, Autumn/Winter, 2005.
