TREASURER'S REPORT

This year has seen a number of changes which I hope will facilitate members greatly.

Firstly, members from a number of countries have experienced difficulties in transmitting membership fees.  Secondly, there are increased restrictions as to the forms of payment which are acceptable to the banks. In the light of these considerations, the forms of payment have been reviewed, some of the older ones have been excluded, and the option to pay by credit card has been introduced.  Thirdly, payment now needs to be in Euros for those in the relevant countries.  Fourthly, there are increased costs associated with the use of credit cards, so revised rates of membership have been fixed. These changes were agreed at the Executive General Meeting and the Annual General Meeting at Dublin City University in August.

The membership form for 2002, which will be sent out early in the New Year to members paid up to the end of 2001, will show the following details about payment:

The methods of payment will be as follows:

1. Personal cheques in Euros (not the old Eurocheques) drawn on an Irish bank, or sterling on a UK/North of Ireland bank, payable to IASIL; mail to Dr Patricia Lynch, Dept of Languages and Cultural Studies, University of Limerick, Plassey, Limerick, Ireland.

2.   Bank drafts in Euros (not the old Eurocheques), mail to Dr Patricia Lynch, Department of Languages and Cultural Studies, University of Limerick, Plassey, Limerick, Ireland.

3. U.S.Dollar Cheque, payable to IASIL, mail to Professor José Lanters, Dept of English, University of Wisconsin, P.O. Box 413, Milwaukee, WI USA 53201-0413.

4. Canada Dollar Cheque, payable to IASIL, mail to Prof. Carol Tattersall, 970 Oxford St West, London, Ontario, CANADA N6H 1V4.

5.  By Visacard or Mastercard/Eurocard (see below).   NB. This option can only be used with the invoice on the membership form.

Note that the old-style Eurocheques, and International Postal Orders can no longer be processed in the Bank.

Another decision reached at the Annual General Meeting relates to the setting up of a Support Fund, to subsidise travel to and accommodation at the triennial conferences in Ireland, for non-student members from countries where the financial costs would otherwise constitute great hardship.  There will be a space on the membership form for members who wish to contribute to this fund, similar to the space for contribution to the Honour Fund which gives scholarships to student members to the triennial conferences in Ireland.

Finally, there were four new members who paid the fees at the conference in DCU last August, for whom I have not been able to find addresses.  Consequently, they have not received their Spring issues of the Irish University Review after the conference, and will not receive the Winter issue unless I can supply the secretary of the journal with addresses.  These members are:

·        Britta Johanssen,

·        Patricia Nolan

·        Zsuzsa Csikai

·        Lucia Bastos

If they see this report, or if there are members who know their addresses, I would be very grateful if they could email them to me at: patricia.lynch@ul.ie

The New Year is likely to keep your Treasurer well occupied, as I have to be trained into the use of the credit card scheme.  In addition, for every payment made in this way, the credit card company has to be phoned for a new code; the maximum number of such authorisations which can be made per phone call is three.  As I am also on sabbatical and away from base a lot this academic year I crave your indulgence therefore if delays may occur in processing the transactions.   Just contact me at the email address above if you have difficulties, and I will do my best to accommodate you.

My very sincere good wishes for the coming festive season, however you may observe it, and for the New Year.  Looking forward to meeting you in Brazil.

Patricia Lynch
