An Irish-American Bullán

Has Bullán died the death? On 17 March 1997 we received a letter from the editors of the highly stimulating and well-subscribed journal enterprisingly launched by Rónan McDonald and Ray Ryan from their fastness in Hertford College, Oxford. The letter announced that Bullán would henceforth be published and distributed through the University of Notre Dame Press, presumably as part of its Irish Studies programme.

It went on, 'Bullán will remain an independent journal committed to scholarly excellence in all areas of Irish studies' and 'will continue to provide a forum for essays and reviews from established and emerging scholars.' From that point forwards, nothing has been heard other than the news that Ray Ryan is ensconced in Cambridge University Press, where he is building the list of which Vincent Cheng's 1995 book on Joyce, Race and Empire was a superb foretaste.
