Irish Publishers

Abbey Press
A small publisher of Irish poetry, based in Newry. Founded in 1997 by poet/editor Adrian Rice and English teacher Mel McMahon.

Blackstaff Press
Belfast-based publisher which, since 1971, has issued an impressive list of books – mostly, though not exclusively, of relevance to Northern Ireland.

Brandon Books
Brandon has been a leading imprint in Ireland since 1982. They have established an international reputation for our fiction and non-fiction and have enjoyed a colourful and often controversial history. The quality and wide appeal of Irish writing are well represented in the catalogue. Although they are a small company publishing only about fifteen titles a year, many of the bestselling books published in Ireland have been published by Brandon.

Carysfort Press
The major Irish publisher of books on drama and theatre, Carysfort Press has been instrumental in the growth of serious theatre criticism in Ireland. They also produce wonderfully readable books on a variety of authors and issues. Recent highlights include volumes on Marina Carr, Tom Murphy, and Frank McGuinness.

Cois Life
Cois Life has published 50 titles in the Irish language on a broad range of topics (tuition, literature, academic research, children's literature etc) and maintains a very good website which is a useful resource for anyone interested in literature in Irish. The site is constantly being developed and the lastest addition is a bilingual (English and Irish) series of biographies/bibliographies of Irish-language authors. Much of the rest of the site is available in five languages. There is also an on-line shop which delivers worlwide.

Cork University Press
Since 1925, one of the leading publishers of Irish Studies material. Notable elements of their back catgalogue include the Field Day Anthology of Irish Literature and the Critical Conditions series.

The Dedalus Press
The Dedalus Press is one of the longest-running literary presses in Ireland. It was founded in 1975 by poet John F Deane and is now run by poet and broadcaster Pat Boran. They publish an average of ten titles per year, made up of both new work from Irish poets and poetry in translation from around the world, often in dual-language editions. Among the Irish or Irish-based poets on our list are Fergus Allen, Leland Bardwell, Eva Bourke, Thomas Kinsella (we issue his Peppercanister series), Mary O'Donoghue, Paul Perry, and Macdara Woods, while titles in translation include anthologies from numerous languages (most recently a dual-language Russian-English publication) and recent individual collections translated from the Japanese (dual-language), Greek, German and Spanish.

Field Day Books
Field Day Books published the first volume of The Field Day Review in 2005. This journal will appear annually; the website includes information on how to subscribe. In addition, Field Day also publishes books. The website also includes information on the Field Day Critical Conditions series, published by Cork University Press (see above).

Four Courts Press
The producer of beautifully produced books on Irish history and literature. Its annual catalogue – which always makes for impressive reading – is downloadable in PDF format.

Gallery Press
The major publisher of poetry and drama in Ireland. Their back catagloue includes the collected works of such poets as Derek Mahon, John Montague and Richard Murphy; their drama list is as impressive, comprising the works of Friel, Kilroy, Carr and others.

Irish Academic Press
A publisher of scholarly works on Irish literature and other related disciplines. Recent publications include major anthologies of eighteenth and nineteenth century Irish literature (see the 2005 IASIL Newsletter for more information)

The Liffey Press
Founded in 2001, the Liffey Press has already established an impressive catalogue of books of Irish interest.
