IASIL Conference 2003: Original Call for Papers

IASIL 2003
The University of Debrecen, Hungary
7-11 July

“Getting into Contact”

“Irish literature, if it is to live and grow, must get into contact on the one hand with its own past and on the other with the mind of contemporary Europe.” Padraic Pearse

The 2003 conference of the International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures will be held at the University of Debrecen 7-11 July featuring Anthony Roche, University College Dublin, editor of the Irish University Review, Maureen Murphy, Hofstra University, USA, former president of IASIL, John Montague, prominent Irish writer, and Richard Cave, Royal Holloway-University of London.

Contributions will be considered on any aspect of Irish literatures but especially those that relate to the announced theme. Because of the nature of the conference topic, papers will be welcome from a broad range of disciplines. Papers on any aspect of John Montague’s oeuvre including poetry, essays, and fiction along with papers related to the Field Day Anthology of Irish Women’s Writing and Traditions to be published in late 2002 will be particularly welcome. Deadline for paper proposals is 15 November and for abstracts 1 March 2003. Presenters must be IASIL members in good standing.

The conference will offer tours of Debrecen, a half-day local excursion, a special night of Irish drama along with readings by several invited Irish writers, and conclude with a festive Farewell Dinner and an optional post-conference tour.

For more information on all aspects of the conference, program, and venue log on to the conference web site or email IASIL03@delfin.klte.hu.
